About

Mission Statement

To give God all the glory & harvest the fruit of the Holy Spirit, as we are blessed to minister to people the uncompromising & unadulterated gospel in the name of our Lord & savior, Jesus Christ.

Affirmation of Faith

The Word of God – We believe that the Bible is the word of God, fully inspired & without error in its original manuscripts, written under the inspirations of the Holy Spirit & has supreme authority in all matters of faith & conduct.

The Trinity – We believe that there is one living & true God, externally existing in three persons that are equal in every divine perfection, & that they execute distinct, but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence, and redemption.

God the Father – We believe in God the Father, an infinite personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, & love. We believe he concerns himself mercifully in the affairs of men. He hears & answers prayers, & he saves from sin all who come to him through Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ – We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in his virgin birth, sinless life, miracles & teachings. We believe substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into Heaven, perpetual intercession for his people, & personal visible return to Earth.

The Holy Spirit – We believe in the Holy Spirit, who came from the Father & Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, judgment, to regenerate, sanctify, & empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells in every believer in Christ & is an abiding helper, teacher, & guide.

Regeneration – We believe that all men are sinners by nature & are therefore, under condemnation. We believe that those who repent of their sins & trust in Jesus Christ as savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit.

History

Avalon Chapel of the Cross was set as a mission on August 28, 1980, in the home of the late Matthew & Sis. Wilma Turner under the leadership of Minster Willie Page. Avalon Chapel was later organized at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church on September 4, 1980 by Pastor James Toldson. On September 6, 1980, Avalon Chapel moved to 1628 South Long Beach Boulevard in Compton, California. From October 6, 1980 to March 28, 1982, Avalon Chapel worshiped at 4183 South Figueroa Street. Later, Avalon Chapel once again moved to 1914 East 41st Street & remained from April 4, 1982 to October 30, 1983. Avalon Chapel’s last move before finding a permanent home was made on November 20, 1983 to 5859 South Broadway until March 27, 1988.

On April 3, 1988, the Lord opened the windows of Heaven & poured out his abundant blessings upon Avalon Chapel of the Cross, by enabling the Pastor & its members to come on one accord, step out in faith, & were blessed with the finances to put a down payment on the current address at 11121 South Avalon Boulevard. The Lord’s blessings did not stop there… There were moderate changes made to the building to improve its appearance & a bus was purchased to transport its members. On Sunday, November 8, 1998, Avalon Chapel celebrated paying off its mortgage, along with additional loans that were paid off in the year 2000. All names were removed from the deed & now Avalon Chapel of the Cross belongs to its members.

Sadly, on December 18, 2000, Pastor Willie Paige was called home to be with the Lord. Evangelist Mariah Brown was appointed to leadership position & served faithfully for 2+ years. In spite of some opposition, Avalon Chapel remained open & held on financially, while awaiting the arrival of a new pastor. After a phone call was made, a minister was sent to assist Avalon Chapel, which was Minster W.T. Montgomery, who was elected as the new & current pastor of Avalon Chapel of the Cross in December, 2002. He would be installed as the pastor on March 23, 2003.

Under the new leadership of Pastor Montgomery, Avalon Chapel has taken many leaps of faith & continues to practice “walking by faith & not by sight.” The level of faith, spirituality, love, & unity at Avalon Chapel has allowed God the opportunity to come in, abide, & begin to manifest his powerful works. The building has once again been renovated & remodeled, the music ministry has been anointed with talented musicians & sound engineering, & now Avalon Chapel of the Cross has been blessed to take its ministry to the world wide web. With more blessings to come, Avalon Chapel of the Cross is a testimony in itself, showing how God’s grace is sufficient.
